Genus: Chrysanthemum
The chrysanthemum is an elegant flowering perennial of the daisy family (asteraceae) originating in the Far East. Chrysanthemums were first cultivated in China for about 1,000 years and then introduced to Japan in 400 AD. The Emperor of Japan made the chrysanthemum his official seal and Japan still celebrates the chrysanthemum in the Festival of Happiness. The flowers reached Europe - England specifically - in the 17th century.
The name chrysanthemum is rooted in the Greek prefix "chrys-" meaning "golden" which refers to the original color of the flower. Nowadays, the most common colors of these flowers are white and red but they also come in pink, yellow, bronze, magenta, and purple.
Chrysanthemums come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from the enormous mums - which incidentally are a favorite choice for high school football Homecoming ribbons - to delicate bunches of pompons or buttons.
Chrysanthemums are equally delightful as cut flowers or blooming houseplants. As cut flowers, because of the multiple blooms per stem, they create very attractive bouquets, whether all the same color or a blend of two or more colors. They also perk up any arrangement of flowers, especially bouquets of lilies and daisies.
